Medical Technician - Phlebotomy

He/she utilizes systems such as VISTA/CPRS to maintain accurate patient data, generate orders placed by medical staff, and communicate with medical professionals to accurately provide patient care. He/She collects laboratory specimens from a wide patient demographic using varying methods of collection to include venipuncture of patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The samples are collected for use in all laboratory areas, including hematology, chemistry, cytology, serology, and blood bank and consultation testing for outside reference labs. He/she works closely with specialty clinics to assist with collecting specimens for medical research. Medical Technicians also cover the Central Specimen Processing Unit area of the main laboratory by accessioning samples, maintaining specimen integrity and order accuracy for samples arriving from throughout the hospital, other VA clinical facilities and CBOCs. Clerical duties in this area involve answering incoming departmental calls, contacting medical staff to correct order errors, obtaining new testing orders, or cancelling or merging duplicate and obsolete orders. He/She verifies specimen requirements for reference lab samples and is required to prioritize samples added to the rounds collection list using VISTA for patients admitted to all hospital wards including those patients with heightened safety precautions such as respiratory, droplet, and contact exposure levels. He/she maintains supplies for all level of specimen collection, appropriate PPB, and varying collection services to be used to standard and reference sample quality. Prioritizing collection order and sample integrity are essential skills to avoid error or repeat testing, and using procedural guidelines in place to verify the Identity of every sample collected. The inpatient environment also requires the technician to collect and prioritize into the lab orders which include timed testing, multiple draws, STAT orders and testing that require use of centrifugation, incubation, and chilling. Experience:
Applicants must possess (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
(a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or(b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR, Substitution of Education for Experience (Transcript Required):
Successful completion of a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least twenty-four (24) semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full time-time academic study is defined as thirty (30) semester hours, forty-five (45) quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least twenty (20) hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately thirty-six (36) weeks in a business, or technical school. Physical Requirements:
Physical demands may involve lifting, standing, walking, bending, or sitting, any of which may be required for prolonged periods of time. The Medical Technician must be able to communicate verbally and have the digital dexterity and adequate vision to perform safe venipuncture procedures. Lifting will not exceed weight of 40 pounds. The person in this position will utilize all safety practices and equipment required by the laboratory, facility policy, accrediting and regulatory agencies for purposes of ensuring compliance with occupational safety requirements. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
